The depth of China's offshore oilfield operation has increased from about 20 meters in the 1980's to 300 meters at present, and the Liwan Oilfield, which has a water depth of 1,500 meters, has also entered the design phase, marking the transformation of China's offshore oilfield development from "shadow water" to "deep water". This is according to the Second Strategic Forum on China's Offshore Oil and Gas Equipment Development.
Over the past several years, China's offshore oil and gas equipment manufacturing industry has made a series of breakthroughs. For example, many types of Chinese marine engineering and auxiliary ships have realized bulk production, and occupied over half the international market. China has also undertaken the most advanced sixth-generation semi-submerged drilling platform project at a water depth of 3,000 meters.
