Fourteen miners were trapped in a flooded coal shaft Thursday in east China's Jiangxi Province.

The flooding occurred at 4:50 a.m. on Thursday at the Zhayi colliery in Shangtang township of Fengcheng city when 15 people were working underground. One had managed to escape, according to sources from the state-owned Fengcheng Mining Bureau, which administrates the colliery.

The township-level mine has an annual output of 30,000 tons.

Rescuers are struggling to search for the trapped workers. Provincial Governor Hong Li and officials with local mining safety watchdog are rushing to the site of the accident.
