A total of 6,835 people died in road accidents across China in October, a drop of 19 percent from the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
China reported 25,555 road accidents in October, down 18.1 percent. The accidents also resulted in 29,189 injuries and a direct economic loss of 80 million yuan (about 10.7 million U.S. dollars), said the traffic management department under the ministry.
The number of injuries went down 15.3 percent, and property losses caused by road accidents were down 32.7 percent, it said.
Eighty-nine percent of deaths were caused by illegal driving, including speeding and driving without a license, the department said.
