A heavy fog covering most parts of the Chinese capital since Tuesday forced many expressways closed which link Beijing with the neighboring provinces, city authorities said on Wednesday.

Tuesday's mist has grown into heavy fog overnight and reduced visibility to less than 500 meters, the municipal meteorological observatory said.

For safety considerations, the road transport administration of the Beijing Public Security Bureau has closed down at least four trunk expressways linking Beijing with Shenyang, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang and Kaifeng, major cities of the northern provinces including Liaoning, Hebei and Henan.

The eastern wing of the newly opened Sixth Ring encircling outer Beijing has also been closed in the misty weather.

A clerk with the flight information hotline at the Capital International Airport told Xinhua the fog had delayed several inbound and outbound flights, but no cancellations had been reported by 9:00 a.m.

The weather authority predicted the fog would ease on Wednesday afternoon.
