Rescuers found the bodies of three miners killed by a gas explosion in a coal mine in central China's Henan Province by 11:40 am on Tuesday.
The search operation is continuing for the other nine miners who are still missing following the accident that occurred at 3:00a.m. on Monday.
"The victims were a driver of a coal carrier and two miners working on a mining machine," said Yang Jianguo, an official with the Pingdingshan Coal (Group) Co., Ltd. who is in charge of work safety.
"We are working hard to clear the coal debris blocking the tunnel and then rescuers will be able to get closer to the location where the trapped miners may be," said Yang.
Twenty-four miners were working in the No. 10 mine of the Pingdingshan Coal (Group) Co., Ltd. in Pingdingshan when the explosion occurred.
Twelve managed to escape while the other 12 were trapped.
