The last county seat to be inundated by floodwater in the Three Gorges reservoir will be demolished on Thursday.

Preparations were completed for the destruction of 13 buildings in the old seat of Kaixian County in southwestern Chongqing Municipality on Wednesday afternoon, said Qi Meiwen, Kaixian County Migration Bureau director.

The demolition, which involves 400 kilograms of dynamite, begins at 3 p.m. on Thursday and will take 3.5 seconds.

A total of 457 households in the old county seat were relocated as of the end of October, according to Qi.

Kaixian is the last of eight counties in Chongqing that hasn't completed its relocation work for the gigantic Three Gorges hydropower project.

At the end of 2006, 1.2 million people in central Hubei Province and Chongqing Municipality had been moved out of the reservoir area. However, officials say an additional 120,000 to 150,000 people still need to be relocated.

The Three Gorges Project, the world's largest water control facility, is located on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest waterway and one of the most important inland shipping routes in the country.
