An abandoned communications tower fell from the top of a 25-story building in Shanghai on Monday afternoon, killing one worker and injuring another who was dismantling it.

The 10-meter tower fell from a height of 80 meters at around 3 p.m. in the Xuhui District, bringing the two workers down with it. The falling tower broke the roof of a nearby house, which was empty at the time, and damaged several bicycles.

The communications tower belonged to China Unicom and had been used for beeper and paging services.

Police and work safety officials rushed to the site to rescue and investigate the cause of the accident.
