The Tibet Autonomous Region government invested 4.15 billion yuan (about 568 million U.S. dollars) on the construction of highways across the plateau region in 2007.
Zhao Shijun, head of the regional bureau of communications, said Wednesday that the new highways brought the region's total road length to 48,600 km at the end of 2007, 3,600 km more than in2006.
So far, highways have reached 90 percent of the 74 cities and counties and 60 percent of the 6,000 villages across the region, the official said.
The region will invest six billion yuan (about 820 million U.S. dollars) in 2008 to build highways to give 10 counties and 360 villages easier access to the outside world, said Zhao.
The central Chinese government invested 18.74 billion yuan (about 2.56 billion U.S. dollars) in improving road facilities in Tibet over the past five years, building and upgrading roads and highways totaling 25,000 km.
