More than 300 workers fell ill on Wednesday in Shenzhen after eating at their factory canteen in the southern Chinese boom city, company sources confirmed on Thursday.
They all ate Chinese cabbage and kidney beans for lunch and suffered nausea and vomiting in the afternoon, said a manager at the factory that produced hardware and plastic in the outer Long gang District.
The workers were sent to five hospitals for treatment.
Sources with Shenlian Hospital said 36 were under intensive care but none were critical.
Investigators suspected undercooked kidney beans as the cause of the illness.
Experts said kidney beans contained lectin, a toxic agent that could cause diarrhea if the beans weren't heated thoroughly. Source: Xinhua
