According to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, 345 million Chinese crossed the border in 2007 – an increase of 8.38 percent. Among them more than 80 million were Chinese mainland residents and 50 million foreigners crossed the border.
The Chinese border authority confirmed that in 2007 the number of Chinese mainland residents to cross the border surpassed 81,328,500; and the number of foreigners approximately 52,071,900. Approximately 220 million residents from Hong Kong and 9,236,400 Taiwan people crossed the border. Year-on-year growth is respectively 18.5%, 17.6%, 2.9% and 4.8%.
According to statistics, the top 10 countries (or regions) that China's mainland residents depart to are: Hong Kong, China; Macao, China; Japan; South Korea; Vietnam; Russia; Thailand; the United States; Singapore; and Malaysia. Hong Kong has become the favored destination for Chinese mainland residents. The top ten countries whose people visit China most are: South Korea, Japan, Russia, the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Mongolia, Vietnam and Thailand.
