Ten catchwords from the Chinese media in 2007 were announced today. The Comprehensive Ten Catchword categories are: the 17th CPC National Congress, "Chang'e 1,” the people's livelihood, the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's reunification with China, the rise in CPI (consumer price index), low-rent housing, the Olympic torch bearer, fund holders, China-Japan relations, and global climate change.
According to the briefing, media catchwords are those words in newspapers, television, radio, the Internet and other media that are rapidly and widely disseminated. Catchwords are a true reflection of the media and summarize the year's domestic policy initiatives, social events, as well as the public's focus on changes in the international situation of particular cultural and social significance.
Also announced today are Ten Catchwords from seven other categories: international current affairs, current domestic political affairs, social lifestyle, economic class, education, culture and entertainment, and science and technology. There are also Ten Catchwords under four themes: building a harmonious society, people's livelihood, finance, and the Olympic Games.
The Ten Catchwords were jointly announced by the State Monitoring and Research Center of Language Resources, Beijing Language and Culture University, China's Media University, Central China Normal University, China's Information Technology Workers Federation, and the China Chinese Language Information Society.
