A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for establishing a new area of reformative and innovative spirit in the Party's publicity, ideological and cultural work.
Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the call at a national conference on the Party's publicity and ideological work in Beijing from Jan. 21-23, and addressed by CPC Central Committee General Secretary and Chinese President Hu Jintao.
The meeting summed up the achievements of the Party in publicity and ideology since the opening of the 16th Party Congress in 2002, and set the publicity and ideological work in the next five years.
In his speech, Li recalled the past five years and analyzed the new situation and tasks for publicity and ideological work. He hailed the progress since 2002 under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary.
Li urged the Party's publicity and ideological workers to make it the primary task to further study, publicize and implement the essence of the 17th Party Congress, stressing that they must more conscientiously implement the principles of reflecting the real situation of the people.
Greater and better efforts should be made in the Party's overseas publicity work, so as to "increase the international impact of Chinese Culture", he said.
Li also pledged to strengthen and improve the Party leadership in the fields of publicity, ideology and culture.
Liu Yunshan, a member of both the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, also spoke, urging participants to seriously study and understand the important speeches of Hu and Li.
Present at the conference were State Councilor Chen Zhili and Chen Kuiyuan, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
The People's Daily will publish an editorial on Thursday to echo the Party leaders' call for opening up a new area in publicity and ideological work.
The general requirements were to uphold the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, centering on the general situation, serving the people, and adhering to the Reform and Opening-up, the editorial says.
