More donations for victims of snow-hit regions nationwide are being sought to augment the cash and necessities given by charities and other non-governmental organizations to aid victims of the disaster.

The Red Cross Society of China has been appealing for urgently needed supplies like food, medicine, blankets and winter coats for the victims, especially for those in remote and poor areas.

Cash donations are being encouraged because transportation of heavier, large supplies were limited by the heavy snow.

The Red Cross has given out 8 million yuan ($1.11 million) worth of donations such as food, medicine, temporary shelters and more than 86,000 coats and blankets for the worst-hit areas.

The China Foundation For Poverty Alleviation launched a disaster relief campaign on Tuesday and provided about 20 million yuan of donations and 600,000 yuan cash to buy rice and other necessities for distribution in Anhui, Hunan and Guizhou provinces.

By yesterday, the organization received close to 11.5 million yuan and HK$250,000 ($32,000) in cash and other supplies.

On Friday, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government approved a grant of HK$8 million from the Disaster Relief Fund for the Hong Kong Red Cross to provide emergency relief to victims of the snowstorm in the mainland.

The snow, the heaviest in decades in many regions, has been falling in east, central and south China for more than a fortnight.

It has claimed numerous lives and caused building collapses, power outages, highway closures and destroyed livestock and crops.
