The number of seamen missing of China's east coast since the weekend rose to 17 on Tuesday when one person disappeared after a boat capsized. One person has been confirmed dead in three maritime accidents in the East China Sea since Sunday.
The accident happened at 3:30 a.m. when a fishing boat, carrying 13 crew, was caught in a storm and capsized on its way back to Jishan Port, according to Taizhou Frontier Station, Zhejiang Province, on Wednesday.
Local police had rescued 12 people an hour after they received the report. The search for the final crew member is continuing.
On Sunday, a fishing boat registered in Zhejiang was reported to have capsized off Jiangsu Province.
Officials with the Zhejiang Provincial Ocean and Fisheries Bureau could not confirm the number of crew aboard because the boat had been refused a sailing permit as it failed to have a fully qualified crew. At least ten people were believed to be on the boat when the accident occurred.
Five crew of a ship carrying sandstone from east China's Fujian Province to Zhejiang's Rui'an City have been missing off Zhejiang since the ship lost contact on Sunday, said officials with Wenzhou Maritime Bureau.
On Tuesday, a cargo ship with six crew on board sank off Zhoushan City at 4:30 a.m. One person was found dead, and three others were rescued. But another two are still missing.
Maritime rescue services are still searching for them.
Investigations into the causes of the accidents have begun, but the provincial maritime authorities said poor operating procedures, a lack of qualified crew and poor safety awareness were all factors.
