At the recent 5th session of the Study Abroad and Diversification Training Forum, Secretary of the International Office of Ministry of Education Zhang Xiuqin said: "From 1978 to the end of 2006, the total number of people who went abroad for an education reached 10.6 million. In 1978, the total number of people studying abroad was 860. By the end of 2006, this number reached 1.3 million, an increase of 155 times over 29 years."
Zhang Xiuqin said that the latest 2007 statistics are in process; but in terms of dispatched overseas students, there 51% more than the 8,242 in 2006. Apart from the continued growth in number of students, the choices in destination and major are more extensive and diverse. "Several years ago, students were mainly concentrated in the hot spots of Britain, the United States and other developed countries. Today, some smaller nations are attracting students. There are Chinese students currently studying abroad in 109 countries."
