According to the China News Network, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps said on the 5th that the it plans to connect two existing shelter systems to create a 1,000 km-long, green forest that would control the sands coming from the Taklimakan Desert and the Gurbantunngut Desert.
This eco-shelter runs 600 km along the northwestern edge of the Taklimakan Desert and 400 km along southern edge of the Gurbantunngut Desert. It is 1-2 km wide. The green belt is a comprehensive shelter system of trees, shrubs and grasses.
At the same time, the Corps plans to turn more than 1,200 mu of cropland into forestland: 4.65 million acres of man-made forest; and 6 million acres of natural mountainous forest reserves, where cutting trees is prohibited.
