A desperate Chinese wife set fire to more than 400 brand new mobile phones in an attempt to win her estranged husband's heart back -- only to be arrested for arson.
The 37-year-old woman, identified only by her surname Wang, and her husband ran a successful phone retail business in Weifang city, in the eastern province of Shandong, the Qilu Evening News reported on Friday.
However, the marriage had been steadily approaching the rocks and the couple frequently fought, the local newspaper said.
On the evening of March 3, after another bitter row, the husband slammed the door and left their rented home.
The paper said Wang was overcome with despair and gathered their entire new stock of phones on the bed, poured kerosene on them and set them alight, before leaving the home too.
Their neighbors reported black smoke pouring from the home and called firefighters who quickly extinguished the blaze. However, the handsets valued at more than 300,000 yuan (42,100 U.S. dollars) were all destroyed, the report said.
