There was a .551% (551/1,000) mortality rate for city residents in 2007. Non-infectious diseases were the main causes of death; and cancer was ranked as the number one killer, causing of 24.55% deaths,according to Beijing Municipal Health Bureau spokesman Deng Xiaohong in Beijing Times on the 13th.
Deng Xiaohong said that in 2007, 66,421 city residents died, and the death rate was 0.551 percent. Among the causes of death, 86.58% of deaths were caused by malignant tumors, cardiovascular disease, heart disease, respiratory disease and infection from an injury. Deaths from infectious diseases accounted for only 0.91% of total deaths. Viral hepatitis and tuberculosis caused the most deaths, accounting for about 80% of deaths from infectious diseases.
Deng Xiaohong said that in recent years, Beijing's cancer mortality rate has been rapidly increasing; but this is the first time cancer has been ranked as the leading cause of death in cities. The mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases increased at a slower pace; and such a change is particularly apparent in Beijing.
