Chinese communities in a number of countries and regions have expressed their opposition toward the Taiwan authorities' referendum on whether the island province of China should attempt to enter the United Nations.
Chinese communities in over 30 foreign countries and regions, including the United States, France, Russia, Britain, Germany, and Japan, jointly issued a letter of appeal Tuesday to commemorate the third anniversary of the enactment of China's Anti-Secession Law and to rally Chinese communities all over the world to launch campaigns against the Taiwan authorities' planned referendum.
The letter called on overseas Chinese communities to organize anti-secession activities such as parades, signature campaigns and seminars Friday as part of a global campaign against the referendum plan.
The Chinese community in New York issued a statement Thursday to denounce the Taiwan authorities' plan to hold a U.N. membership referendum and attempt to separate Taiwan province from China.
The General Chinese Trader Union in the Philippines said in a statement that the referendum would seriously damage cross-Strait relations as well as peace and stability in Asia. It said the U.N. membership attempt will only lead to a dead end and will be opposed by Chinese people worldwide.
In Poland, the Chinese community has voiced unswerving opposition toward Taiwan's secessionist forces and expressed determination to push for the reunification of the Chinese nation.
Chinese communities in Brazil and Egypt also launched campaigns against the Taiwan authorities' referendum plan.
In Paris, the most widely circulated Chinese language newspaper in Europe, the Nouvelles d'Europe, carried an editorial Thursday to commemorate the third anniversary of the enactment of China's Anti-Secession Law, which set a legal framework to prevent Taiwan's secession from China.
