Beginning this year, China will put 570 million yuan towards the maintenance of the 22 heritage buildings and temples in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
According to the Secretary for regional heritage, Yu Dawa, the maintenance will be carried out at 15 key heritage sites and important temples; and seven historical sites that demonstrate China's governance of Tibet during the Dynastic period. These include Tashilhunpo Monastery, Shalu Monastery, Nai Ning Temple, Jokhang Monastery, Ramoche Temple, Zhaibung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Samye Monastery, Chanzhub Monastery and the Gyangze Anti-British sites in the mountains, Langsaining Manor, Lajiali Royal Palace, and the Guge Kingdom sites.
While China intensifies heritage preservation in Tibet, the local Tibet government has been increasing financial support to protect cultural relics year after year. In 2007, the local Tibet governement allocated 10 million yuan for maintenance work on the Tibetan Xiangkang Temple and Riwuqi Golden Tower. In the meantime, it set aside 5 million yuan in special funds for the protection and maintenance of sites including the Lhasa Guandi Temple, and the Shigatse Tang Dynasty Ambassador’s visit with Sindhu Records.
Tibet is a major cultural relics province in China. In the past 20 years, the central government and the autonomous regional government have invested more than 700 million yuan for the maintenance of, or to open, more than 1,400 temples and monasteries, cultural monuments and places of religious activity.
