Zhou Liangluo, former head of Beijing Haidian District who was sentenced to death with a two-year suspension for corruption, decided not to appeal to a higher court because he felt the sentence "nothing unexpected," a local newspaper Beijing Times reported on Saturday.

The charged bribes taken by the 50-year-old Zhou include cash and a villa valued at more than 16 million yuan (2.3 million U.S. dollars) when he performed duty in an adjacent district of Chaoyang and got promoted to the ranking post in Haidian District from 1998 to 2006, said a ruling from the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court. He was charged with illegally offering convenience to local real estate developers, the newspaper said.

Zhou's wife, 46-year-old Lu Xiaodan who ran two consulting firms under the influence of her husband, was sentenced to life for receiving more than 8 million yuan during the same period.

Neither Zhou nor Lu said on the court that they were going to appeal to the higher court, the newspaper said.

Beijing prosecutors have obtained convictions of 102 bureau head-level officials on corruption and bribery charges over the past five years, according to a report in January.
