The Beijing municipal government is planning to authorize police to randomly check people at the Tiananmen Square, as a normality for security reasons, a local newspaper said on Saturday.
Police usually do more frequent security check during national holidays and big events when the square is swarmed in by too many tourists, the newspaper said.
The security check will be conducted by patrolling police when they perceive such check necessary for searching knives, the flammable and other hazardous tools or materials, Zhou Jidong, who heads the municipal government's legislative affairs office, was quoted as saying by Beijing Times.
The municipal government is also devising regulations on contingencies of public transportation facilities. According to the drafted regulations, contingency plans should be adopted by subway stations if passenger flows are reaching its capacity, the newspaper said.
Another official from the municipal legislative affairs office said the government will try to further restrict smoking to tiny designated areas, banning smoking in sports venues, gym clubs, Internet cafes, parks, entertainment plazas, office and conference buildings.
The official said smoking will be eventually banned in all public areas in Beijing, the newspaper said. Source: Xinhua
