By the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the project to establish a 10 million-kilowatt wind power base in Jiuquan, Gansu province is to begin construction.
The tentative idea to set up a "wind power" corridor in the Hexi corridor (the area west of the Yellow River, an essential passageway along the Old Silk Road) is about to be realized. Experts predict that Gansu province will become China's largest wind power generation industry zone within the next 10 years.
Gansu is abundant in wind power resources. According to the latest assessment by the Gansu Meteorological Bureau, the province has a total wind power reserve of 237 million kilowatts which accounts for 7.3% of the nation's total. In addition, the province has the potential to develop 27 million kilowatts: 10.6% of the entire nation's. There is up to 50,000 square kilometers, 10.6% of the provincial surface, of land available to develop wind power.
In order to transform the wind power into clean energy, Gansu has proposed to establish a "Wind Power" Corridor and a Western "Terrestrial Three Gorges" as its strategic goals in recent years, pushing the thriving wind power generation industry across the province.
By the end of 2007, the capacity of installed wind turbines had reached 500,000 kilowatts. Now, in the Jiuquan region, 800 million kilowatts of wind power electricity is generated annually; and the capacity of installed wind turbines accounts for 1/5 of the nation's total.
