By the end of March 31 this year, the sales from the Welfare Lottery tickets had reached 15.685 billion yuan, an increase of 16.6% over the same period last year, according to the news form China Welfare Lottery Management Center.
A total of 5.2 billion yuan have been raised in the first quarter of this year, 50% of which will go into central government financing to be used to supplement the social security fund; support the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games; support the undertakings of handicapped persons; provide urban and rural medical assistance; and construct a recreational facility for young people.
The remaining 50% will go toward local welfare and assistance.
