In the first quarter of this year, a total of 120,000 new vehicles hit Beijing's roads. On average, the number increased daily by more than 1,300 vehicles; and it is expected that Beijing will see 3.35 million motor vehicles on its roads by August, when the Olympic Games will be held, according to statements made by the Beijing Municipal Public Security Traffic Authority on April 2.
An official at the Beijing Traffic Control department said that this year the growth rate of Beijing motor vehicles is accelerating. So far, the city's motor vehicles achieved 13.34 percent growth in the number over the same period last year. The Vehicle Management Department issues more than 1,300 plates daily. At this rate, Beijing might begin issuing M plates in early April. Only seven months have passed since Beijing began issuing the L plates. This indicates that the L plates were the fastest ever issued.
Fourteen months had passed since Beijing first issued J plates before the city began issuing K plates; another 12 months passed before the L plates were issued; and now only 7 months have passed since the L plates were issued. Among the new vehicles, privately-owned vehicles accounted for 81 percent. At the same time, Beijing's second-hand car market has been flourishing with a monthly transaction volume of about 30,000. This is also a factor in the accelerated growth of new vehicles.
