Beijing has a foreign language population of 5.5 million, accounting for 35 percent of the total resident population. Generally speaking, people who can understand some simple articles; can engage in simple conversation; and whose foreign language capabilities reach the low to intermediate level, make up the foreign language population, according to Beijing Evening.
As was learned from the 2008 Beijing foreign language activity and regulation of English logos in public places meeting, the city has replaced more than 390,000 English logos in public places. The city's project to translate Chinese menus into English is complete; and the translation of job titles and organization names into English is in full swing.
This year, all relevant Beijing district and county departments will check and correct English language logos and signs in a timely manner. Places under modification will include those around the Olympic venues, the media and athlete’s residences, as well as information and service areas for Olympic venues and facilities. Places where staff are heavily concentrated and where foreign tourists visit most – such as transportation hubs, subways and taxis, hotels, catering companies, shopping malls, scenic areas, cultural and entertainment centers, museums, hospitals, sanitation facilities, and tour guide advertisements – will be given the most attention.
