Beijing this year will employ another 3,000 college graduates as "village officers" to ensure that “there are two college students in every village." The news was released at the recent "2008 Beijing conference to guide and encourage college graduates to work in rural areas."
Since 2005, Beijing has been sending college graduates to join rural grass-roots work. In 2006 and 2007, Beijing assigned a total of 5,041 college graduates to the rural suburbs of Beijing as assistant secretaries of village Party branches and assistant directors of village committees. It was the first time China had "college students in every village." This year, there are 1.7 million candidates for "village officers."
It was proposed at the meeting that Beijing will further improve the management of student "village officers," in order to ensure relevant beneficial treatment; and that each year there are a certain number of college student "village officers" recruited for civil service posts. In addition, the county's organization department will provide college students with a village "hotline" to the village office, to resolve their difficulties and problems at any time.
