Wang Yongguo, a ship captain, was sentenced in Shanghai on Monday to five years in jail for causing a maritime collision in January that killed 15 people.

Wang, captain of the "Jinyuanyou 9" cargo ship belonging to the China Ocean Aviation Group Inc., was accused of negligence and misjudgment by the Yangpu District People's Court.

The ship departed at about 1:15 a.m. on Jan. 30 from the estuary of the Yangtze River. Wang, who was commanding the ship, failed to detect another vessel anchored nearby. He then made an incorrect decision when trying to avoid a collision, the court heard.

Fifteen of the 17 crew on the other ship, the "Jintaishun", which was the property of the Liaoning-based Chengyu Shipping Co. Ltd, were killed and another was left missing.

No casualties were reported on the "Jinyuanyou 9".

Wang subsequently surrendered to the police.
