A police wagon ran down seven pedestrians on a highway in central China's Hubei Province on Saturday night, killing three of them, the local government said.
The four injured are being treated at the People's Hospital in Tongcheng County of Xianning, a city in southeastern Hubei. Hospital sources said they were in stable condition.
The victims were walking along a highway in Dayan village of Chongyang County when they were run down by the police wagon at around 11 pm on Saturday, a Xianning city government spokesman said on Sunday.
The driver, a policeman surnamed Yu with the Public Security Bureau of Tongcheng County, has been detained.
An investigation has been launched.
