Construction of the Xi'ning-Geermu line of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is proceeding smoothly and investment now totals 1.5 billion yuan, exceeding the original estimate. According to the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company, the project is expected to be electrified and open by 2012.
The Xi'ning-Geermu line, the next line of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (hereinafter referred to as the "Xi -Ge second-line") starts east from Xi'ning City, capital of Qinghai Province, extends west via the north bank of Qinghai Lake, across the Qaidam Basin and the famous Wanzhangyanqiao Bridge and ends at Golmud City .
According to reports, the total length of the Xi -Ge second-line is 290.69 km, with a total construction period of 60 months and a total investment of 10.6 billion yuan.
