Rescue authorities said Tuesday 3,629 people had been confirmed dead and 18,645 were still under the debris in Mianyang City, which neighbors Wenchuan County, the epicenter of Monday's devastating earthquake.

The quake also caused serious damage to buildings, roads and telecommunications facilities in Mianyang. Water and gas supply were still cut off in many areas.

The quake rocked Wenchuan at 2:28 p.m. Monday. The death toll had risen to 11,921 as of 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to the disaster relief headquarters headed by Premier Wen Jiabao.
