As of 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) had received public donations worth more than 120 million yuan (17 million U.S. dollars) for victims in the earthquake-hit areas in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

So far, 14.6 million yuan worth of relief supplies in both cash and goods have been forwarded to the quake areas, the RCSC said.

Among the supplies were tents, cotton-padded quilts, food, medicine, and drinking water disinfectant.

The RCSC has organized five more disaster relief teams, which set off at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The society sent a rescue team on Monday evening to survey the situation.

The RCSC earlier called for donations. Urgently needed items include tents, cotton-padded quilts, food and water, but these are difficult to move to the disaster region due to transportation problems, according to the RCSC. Cash is preferred at present, said an official with the RCSC.

The China Charity Federation announced on Tuesday it would forward 400 tents and 1 million yuan to the Sichuan region. It also called for public donations.

The China Welfare Lottery Management Center has donated 5 million yuan to Wenchuan County and the China Disabled Persons' Federation and China Welfare Fund for the Handicapped have jointly donated 3 million yuan.

The 7.8-magnitude quake is known to have killed at least 12,000people nationwide on Tuesday.

The public can donate cash to the RCSC through the following bank account: for RMB account, the address is Dongsi Office, Beijing Branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the account number is 0200001009014413252; for foreign currency account, the address is Jiuxianqiao Branch of CITIC Bank and the account number is 7112111482600000209.

The RCSC also opened a hotline +86-10-65139999 and 86-10-64027620 for consultation during the daytime.
