The fast and effective relief efforts organized by the Chinese government in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province have set a good example for other countries, said Karim Yells, an Algerian seismologist on Saturday.
Karim Yelles, director of the Algerian Research Center in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics, made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua, saying that he is fully confident that the Chinese government is capable of coping with the massive disaster.
Yelles also expressed his sincere condolences to the victims of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which has claimed some 28,800 lives.
After the quake struck on Monday, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika expressed deep grief over those killed and offered condolences to their families. The Algerian government has also offered 1 million U.S. dollars to the Chinese government in emergency aid.
