A press conference that covered the status of efforts to ensure telecommunication services, equipment and tools supply, as well as the efforts to ensure power supply, was held by the State Council Information Office at the State Council Information Office's Briefing Hall in Beijing on May 19.

Mr. Xi Guohua, Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Mr. Gu Junyuan, Chief Engineer of State Electricity Regulatory Commission, gave a briefing on the issues.

According to information from the conference, the major earthquake in Sichuan's Wenchuan County has caused grave amounts of human casualties and property loss. Communications facilities and industrial production in disaster areas have been seriously damaged.

The incomplete statistics show that 616 cable exchanges, 16,507 wireless base stations, and a length of 10,960 sheath-km transmission cable have been damaged. This has resulted in an interruption in communications from the outside world to seven counties and numerous townships in badly quake-hit areas in Sichuan Province; a severe blockage of normal communications in Zhouqu, Diebu, Wenxian, Kangxian and Chengxian five counties in Gansu Province; and a great impact on parts of communications in Shaanxi Province.

Industrial and mining enterprises in Sichuan Province, Chongqing Municipality and Gansu Province suffered enormous losses. In Sichuan province alone, 14,207 industrial enterprises were affected by the disaster; direct economic losses amounted to 67 billion yuan; 1,387 people were killed, and 9,798 left injured.
