Recently, Executive Vice President of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee Jiang Xiaoyu gave a comprehensive account of preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games; and said that the Sichuan earthquake will not impact the Olympic Game schedule.

According to Jiang, the preparations for the Beijing Olympics are going smoothly. At present, 37 competition venues and 45 independent training venues in Beijing have been completed. Among 6 associated facilities, the Digital Beijing Building, the National Convention Center, the Olympic village and the media village have been completed; the Multi-Purpose TV Tower is accelerating construction; and the Beijing Olympic Forest Park has completed 90 percent of the total project.

Of the 46 "Good Luck Beijing" events which were organized in accordance with practice before the Olympic Games, 44 of them have been completed. From later this month until June 1, China will hold the final two test competitions. The Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremony rehearsals have been in full swing. The road to launching the opening ceremony has been paved.

According to the plan, all the people involved will be in the National Stadium for rehearsal in June. On July 10 will be the opening ceremony rehearsals for the first time in costume. It is reported that so far, more than 100 members of royal families, or heads of State or Government have intend to attend the Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony, of which more than 60 have substantive negotiations and arrangements through diplomatic channels or other means.

In terms of the Sichaun earthquake's impact on the Olympic agenda, Jiang says the Beijing Olympic Games have a total of 28 big projects, 38 sub-items and 302 small item competitions. All these competitions will be held in Beijing and in six co-host cities, so the Sichuan earthquake has not affected the schedule. The impact, he thinks, will largely be felt along the torch relay route. China will take the Sichuan earthquake-stricken areas and the progress of earthquake relief work there into consideration; and study the issue of the torch relay within Sichuan Province.
