On May 12, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, hit Wenchuan County of Southwest China's Sichuan Province, which has caused massive losses and casualties. According to the latest statistics, the newest death toll has risen to 40,075 people, and 32,361 still remain missing.
The disaster touched the hearts of Chinese people, as well as lots of hearts from other nations. After the quake hit, the Japanese government immediately sent rescue and relief teams. On May 16, a group of 31 rescue professionals was dispatched to China's quake-hit zone. On the evening of May 20, a medical team from Japan arrived in Chengdu, capital of quake-hit Southwest China's Sichuan Province. In addition, Japanese people from all sectors have actively offered donations to assist China's quake-affected victims.
For this, Chinese netizens of PD Online have expressed their appreciation and respect. And some left messages in the hope of deepening a mutual understanding and closer relationship through the incident. Some of these messages are as follows:
[Wang Linghua]: I commend the heroic tenacity of our people, and our compatriot spirit of uniting as one to tide over the difficult times. I am also grateful to all our international friends, including the Japanese people, for their selfless assistance.
[Qian Lianghua]: Soon after the Wenchuan earthquake, Japan dispatched a rescue team to disaster areas to help with the rescue work, and the Japanese people also expressed sincere sympathy and offered assistance. I used to hate the Japanese for their brutal actions during World War II ... Today, I saw their sincerity, and there is no reason for me to keep hating them. Here, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Japanese government and Japanese people: Thank you! And keep the Japanese rescuers safe!
[Qiuchan'er]: Japan's goodwill should be appreciated. And we should know that Japan has good traditions and civil awareness; not only during China's earthquake this time.
[Chunqiulvfeng]: Thank you, Japanese friends! The Sino-Japanese friendship is in the common interest of both peoples. Together in East Asia, the friendly cooperation between the two countries can and will shock the world.
[An old confused tadpole]: (A retired Japanese man in his sixties wrote a letter in Japan to send to the quake-hit areas). Between the lines, boundless sympathy and kindness to Chinese people are seen. After reading the letter, we are very much impressed. He donated only 10,000 yen – although it is only a small portion, a humble small drop of water within the Sino-Japanese friendship – if we, everyone, like the elderly, do a little bit from the start with perseverance, I firmly believe that such a drop of water one day will grow into a current; and wash away all extremist words and deeds!
[Haw Par cool oil]: China and Japan, after all, have the same cultural roots. They are one narrow strip of water. If they cooperate, they will benefit each other. Fight and both will be injured.
[Ginza Liugou]: Most Japanese are kind-hearted, friendly and sympathetic. They actively make donations. Japanese television stations also announce accounts to donate through. We are very grateful to them.
