China will severely publish people who spread rumors or cause social unrest in the aftermath of the May 12 quake, the country's top committee in charge of political and legal affairs said in a statement on Friday.
According to a statement issued after a meeting of the Committee of Political Science and Law under the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, police authorities vowed to impose a firm hand on quake-related crimes, from theft and robbery to speculation and rumor-mongering.
The statement also urged local police to strengthen surveillance and patrols in quake-hit regions.
Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the Committee of Political Science and Law and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the meeting.
A 21-year-old man surnamed Ning was detained on Thursday for spreading on-line rumors about earthquakes in Beihai City of southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
He was accused by the police of writing an on-line post saying that quakes of at least magnitude 7 would hit northwestern Shaanxi and Gansu provinces within two weeks.
