According to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, as of 12:00pm on May 24, monetary donations and material goods from overseas Chinese towards Sichuan earthquake relief had reached 709 million yuan.

Among the donations, 509 million yuan (including material goods valued at 156 million yuan) are donated through "Chinese love - warm earthquake relief operations." The other 200 million yuan account for donations through Chinese embassies and agencies, the Red Cross Society of China, and the China Charity Federation.

Since the Wenchuan earthquake hit, overseas Chinese have been dedicated to helping the disaster areas through various channels.

Chinese Consul General in New York Peng Keyu said that donors went to the consulate in an endless stream; and donations by check poured in like a snowfall.

Many of the donations came with postscripts: "The earthquake has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of compatriots, but can never destroy the confidence and courage of the Chinese people. The more disaster we face, the more we gather together the spirit and forces of the Chinese nation. The overseas Chinese firmly believe that under the strong leadership of the Chinese government, the people of quake-hit areas will certainly overcome the disaster and rebuild their beautiful homeland.
