People across the country and all over the world have offered help after the recent earthquake disaster. At the same time, a nationwide conservation activity also began in China. Central government organs began to reduce public spending in order to reduce administrative expenses and support earthquake relief.
According to the deployment of the State Council, this year the public expenditure of Central State organs will be 5 percent less than the budget; and that 5% will be used for earthquake relief. In this nationawide conservation activity, representatives in all levels of government organs and state-owned enterprises and institutions will reduce the number of meetings, hospitality and travel expenses, and the use of cars; and place limits on groups traveling abroad. They will strictly control car purchases; and suspend approvals for building government organ office project.
After the central government organs' decision to cut 5 percent of public expenditures, many local governments responded by proposing similar cuts. Shanghai's municipal organs will support earthquake relief work this year by cutting 10% of the regular budget for spending; and municipal authorities will stop buying new cars this year.
