To deal with possible outbreak of earthquakes and other sudden disasters, China has actively promoted the construction of earthquake emergency shelters in recent years. In some areas, the building of emergency evacuation sites has been written into overall urban planning.
An emergency earthquake shelter, set up in October of 2003 on the Yuan Dynasty Capital City Wall Relics Park, in Beijing's Chaoyang District, is the first of such shelters in China.
In 2004, the China Earthquake Administration delivered "advice on promoting the building of earthquake emergency shelters." By now, many cities have officially started construction of emergency earthquake evacuation sites.
According to earthquake sector statistics, as of the end of 2007, 68 large- and medium-sized cities all over the country have built or are building emergency earthquake shelters.
