A highway bus accident killed five and injured 16 in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Saturday, local police said.

A long-distance bus with 20 passengers and a driver drove off a highway connecting Chongqing and Yichang City of the central Hubei Province and crashed into a field at noon. The accident left two dead at the site, police said.

The accident happened when it was raining on a section of the highway in Chongqing.

All the injured were taken to a local hospital. Three later died in hospital, while 16 others were in stable condition, police said.

The bus belonged to a long-distance bus company in Chongqing.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
