Through continued forestry ecological construction, China's forest coverage rate has risen from 8.6 percent in the early days of New China to 18.21 percent. Preserved plantation areas reach 800 million mu (53.33 million hectares) and ranking first in the world, according to Xinhua Net.
Reporters learned from the first China Bijie Desertification Control and Ecological Civilization High-Level Forum, held on June 9 in Bijie city of Guizhou Province, that current ecological construction in China has made significant progress. China now has 1,740 nature reserves under forestry system construction and management – covering 12.6 percent of the country's total area ——and they effectively protect 45 percent of natural wetlands and more than 85 percent of rare wildlife species.
Officials from the State Forestry Administration said that the construction of the ecological civilization not only has far-reaching implications for sustainable development; but is also vital to maintaining global ecological security and promoting human civilization. At present, the global ecological crisis which emerged in the past relied mainly on forestry management. But generally speaking, China's ecological situation remains quite grim: there is a long way to go to building an ecological civilization.
It is reported that China is one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of forest resources, and the forest coverage rate ranks 130 in the world. Ecological deterioration has become one of the biggest constraints in China's sustainable economic and social development.
