From January to May this year, tourists who visited Taiwan amounted to 1.572 million. Tourist from Hong Kong and Macao made up 15 percent (235,000) of the total, an increase of 27.7 % over the same period of last year.
This year, Taiwan's tourism sector expects more than 500,000 tourists from Hong Kong and Macao, up 7-10 percent over last year.
The Taiwan Tourism Association held a tourism promotion in Hong Kong on the 11th; and revealed that in 2007, about 3.716 million tourists made visits to Taiwan. Among those tourists, 491,000 came from Hong Kong and Macao, accounting for 13.2% of the total visitors. Hong Kong and Macao visitors stayed 4.29 days on average, with an average daily consumption of 157 U.S. dollars.
Yang Hsiao-tung, commissioner of the Taipei City Government's Department of Information and Tourism (DOIT), was present at the promotion activity. He said that Hong Kong is a major source of tourism for Taiwan and hoped more will travel to Taiwan.
Over the years, Taiwan's tourism industry has been looking forward to opening to receive Chinese mainland tourists. Right now, transportation, accommodation and other tourist facilities are prepared to welcome Chinese mainland tourists with their excellent quality, Yang Hsiao-tung added.
