One person was killed and 35 were injured in an explosion Wednesday at a plaza in Yiwu in east China's Zhejiang Province, local police said Thursday.
Wang Puhong, Yiwu public security bureau deputy director, said the blast was contrived but he ruled out a terror attack.
A number of locals were dancing on the plaza in Dachen Town of Yiwu City when the explosion took place at 8:45 p.m..
All the injured, including two seriously wounded, were in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon, Wang said.
Witness Li Chaomei said several people were lying on the ground when he heard the blast from a nearby market and rushed to the site. He then called police who arrived within minutes.
Zhejiang's top officials have ordered local police to crack the case as soon as possible.
Yiwu is the country's largest distribution center for small commodities. The Yiwu market, with more than 50,000 stalls, reported a trade volume of 3.48 billion yuan (481.3 million U.S. dollars) last year.
