One woman was confirmed dead in a fire that raged for about 18 hours in a residential district of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, fire fighters said on Sunday.
The fire, which was extinguished early Saturday, scorched an area of 4,800 square meters. It burned down 142 homes and affected 390 people in Genhe City in the northern Greater Hinggan Mountains forest zone, said Yang Haixia, a press officer with the fire brigade of Hulun Buir City.
Three people suspected of involvement in the fire were under police observation, Yang said.
The fire broke out at about 11:20 a.m. Friday in a housing area. It ignited the lumber owned by a forestry company and spread to a forest nearby, before it was put out by more than 1,000 fire fighters at around 5 a.m. Saturday.
The local government is investigating the cause of the fire.
