Urban green coverage reached 43%, exceeding the original aim of 40%. As for green areas along the road, the commitment to build 23,000 hectares of green area on both sides of the "5 Rivers and 10 Roads" project has completed ahead of schedule, with a current area of over 25,000 hectares, said Dong Ruilong, Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Gardens Bureau .
At present, the 3 green barriers (the city, urban and suburban areas) have basically taken shape, with a castle peak in the city, forest surrounding urban areas and a green ecological landscape embracing the suburbs. Nowadays Beijing is taking on a green look. In the meantime, the urban green quarantine zone has achieved a total 12,600 hectares of green forest. By 2007, Beijing had established 20 conservation districts with an area of 134,200 hectares, accounting for 8.18% of the city's land.
