A total of 620 million cubic meters of reclaimed water is expected to be used in Beijing this year, accounting for one-sixth of total water consumption (37 billion cubic meters), according to Beijing Water Authority.
Beijing has been upgrading existing sewage treatment plants in order to improve reclaimed water quality and increase its use.
Beijing will increase the use of 20 million cubic meters of reclaimed water in urban rivers and lakes; and provide 100 carriers for the eight inner Beijing districts to supply the reclaimed water for irrigation and washing cars.
10,000 square meters of water plants will be planted in the Changhe River, Liangshui River, Tuchengou and other rivers to absorb nitrogen and phosphorus in the water; and 400,000 silver carp and bighead carp will be put into Beihai River, Tongzi River and other rivers to clean the water.
During the Olympics, the water quality in the Summer Palace, the Kunyu River, the Changhe River and the Zhuanhe River will reach class Ⅲ standards, and the water environment and water quality in the central Olympic area will meet the set standard.
