A 31-year-old mother was arrested here Wednesday on suspicion of throwing out her newborn baby from her apartment in Tuen Mun of northwest New Territories, Hong Kong.

Police accused the suspect, whose name was not disclosed by the police, of infanticide after giving birth.

At around 23:00 Tuesday (1500 GMT), the newborn boy was found lying on the ground next to Ting Hong House of On Ting Estate and was certified later by police as dead at the scene.

Police officers then located the mother in a flat in the estate and sent her to Tuen Mun Hospital. She was arrested for infanticide and is being detained for further investigation.

Tuen Mun District Crime Squad is following up the case. A post-mortem will be conducted later to ascertain the cause of death.
