Four people were held by police after six miners died in a flooded clay mine in east China's Zhejiang Province early on Thursday.
The four people include the legal representative of the clay producing company and its deputy manager, who is in charge of production safety.
The flooding occurred at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Yuhang District of the provincial capital, Hangzhou, when 16 miners were working underground. Rescuers had brought 10 of them to safety, said a spokesman with the Yuhang district government.
Huang Guolin, head of Yuhang health bureau, said initial examination found the victims suffocated.
The rescued miners were being treated in hospital.
Sources said the accident was possibly due to the safety loopholes in the mine's operating procedures.
The flooding occurred at a working platform more than 180 meters underground. The mine is already 50 years old and was required to make safety improvements before the accident by the local production security watchdog.
All the pit mines in the city were ordered to suspend operations pending safety inspections after the accident. Source: Xinhua
