The Electoral Affairs Commission of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government announced here Friday that it will set the nomination period for the fourth term Legislative Council election from July 19 to August 1.

The polling for the new-term Legislative Council will be conducted on Sept. 7, 2008, to return 60 members to the legislature - half by geographical constituency and half by functional constituency.

To run for a seat in a geographical constituency, a nominee must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 21 or above. For the functional constituency, the nominee must be a registered elector for, or have a substantial connection with, their constituency. They must also be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 21 or above and have ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for the three years immediately before nomination.

The Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for the five geographical constituencies and 28 functional constituencies have been appointed to deal with the nomination of candidates and other electoral duties for the constituency under their charge.
